Law making some North Carolina officials nervous
Why do some officials want to hide public documents?
from our "Politics" Desk
Why do some government officials want to hide public records in violation of North Carolina's Sunshine Law? What are they hiding?
During the next several weeks, we will be trying to learn more about North Carolina's Sunshine Law and talking with some local government officials in Hoke County.
The Sunshine Law has received more attention this past month after Elon University hosted a conference on open government laws and public access to government records and meetings. The Elon University School of Communications and the North Carolina Open Government Coalition brought together reporters, editors, and executives from around the state to discuss the barriers to open government.
In addition, the Raleigh News & Observer recently published a series of articles that included examples of government officials trying to keep public records and meeting minutes hidden from taxpayers.
During the next several weeks, we will be trying to learn more about this important issue. We will report our findings to you our readers.
