A recent report on the future of online learning identifies four "types" of individuals expected to use online learning in the future. The "Career Climbers" are young professionals driven by career aspirations. This group is considered a prime market for institutions of higher education. The "Perfection Seekers" are older, accomplished professionals wanting to meet their own expectations for doing their very best. This group does not face financial barriers to continuing their education. The "Mid-Life Changers" is a description of older individuals, with less education and income, looking for something new. This group, expected to have less experience with technology, will require the most support from institutional support. The "Content Dreamer" is described as young, well educated, and well compensated. They are interested in pursuing additional education, but are likely to be several years away from actually enrolling in classes due to their current life and work obligations. With their connections to the business community, government agencies, and elected officials, community colleges are often ideal partners for custom training programs designed for specific companies or industry categories. Community colleges are more entrepreneurial than many larger institutions, which helps make this partnership approach to fast-track training increasingly popular. Gwen Moran discusses this important topic and presents specific examples in an article appearing at the www.strategy-business.com website.
