"Battle of the Books" team loves to read

Team will represent Hoke County in regional competition

from our "Schools & Education" Desk

The Battle of the Books team at East Hoke Middle School will represent Hoke County at the state regional competition on March 29th. The event will be held at the Sampson County Agricultural Exposition Center in Clinton, North Carolina.

The team consists of nine members in 6th and 7th grade: Vayda Ballard, Henry Capers, Tia Cunningham, James Davis, David Garavito, Aaron Kidd, Anastasia Pulanco, Mohamed Samoura, and Lacy Thiery. Mrs. Denise Young, School Librarian, serves as the Battle of the Books Coordinator for Hoke County and coaches the East Hoke Middle School team.

The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level.

Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature.

The game format of Battle of the Books creates interest and excitement in reading, while keeping in mind that the primary goal is to read books rather than to win competitions.

The students participating in Battle of the Books improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.

In addition to statewide coordination, the sponsor of Battle of the Books, the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), provides certificates for system level and regional/cluster battles.
